Description

The Carnelian Cowry is a medium to large-sized marine gastropod, characterized by its smooth, highly polished, ovate shell. In the image, the living animal is partially extending its mantle, which is dark, mottled with blackish-brown and cream/white, and covered with numerous branched papillae. A long, dark siphon is also visible extending from the anterior end. The shell itself, where visible, is a glossy orange or reddish-brown color.
