Description

The Doughboy Scallop is a small to medium-sized bivalve mollusk, characterized by its rounded, somewhat compressed shell. The shell surface is adorned with numerous prominent radial ribs, which may bear small scales or nodules. It typically exhibits a vibrant coloration, often in shades of orange, yellow, red, or purple, sometimes with mottled or banded patterns. The shell has unequal 'ears' on either side of the hinge, with a distinct byssal notch on the anterior ear, allowing the animal to attach itself to substrates.
