Description
The Iridescent Scallop, *Pedum spondyloideum*, is a fascinating bivalve mollusc known for its vibrant, iridescent blue mantle, which is prominently displayed in the image. Unlike many free-living scallops, this species lives commensally embedded within the living tissue of massive corals. Its shell is typically irregular and distorted, adapting to the shape of the cavity it creates within its coral host. The mantle is dark brown to purplish-brown, adorned with striking iridescent blue spots, lines, and patterns, and features numerous small, bright blue ocelli (eyes) along its edge, often with reddish-orange accents.
