Description

Macroschisma africanum is a species of keyhole limpet belonging to the family Fissurellidae. It is characterized by its distinctive elongated, flattened shell and a very large, central apical opening that resembles a long slit, extending almost the entire length of the shell. The shell typically displays an off-white to pale cream base color, often adorned with faint reddish-brown or purplish-brown concentric growth lines and scattered flecks. This marine gastropod is found in the waters off Southern Africa, where it inhabits rocky intertidal and subtidal zones, primarily feeding on algae.
